Abstract:

In this work novel films based on bacterial cellulose (BC), BC modified by polypyrrole (BC-PPy) and polypyrroleZinc oxide nanocomposite (BC-PPy-ZnO) were synthesized. The soft polymerization method at room temperature was used to synthesize BC-PPy and BC-PPy-ZnO films. The Combined D-Optimal design (CDOD) was used to study the effect of pyrrole monomer concentration, ZnO concentration and polymerization time on the morphological, physical, antioxidant, and electrical conductivity properties of films. FT-IR results reflected that some new interactions have occurred between BC and polypyrrole and polypyrrole-ZnO. The XRD analysis showed that the crystalline behavior of the BC fiber core was hindered due to the complete coating with the amorphous PPy sheath. SEM results indicated that the ZnO, PPy and PPy-ZnO nanoparticles were placed between BC fibers. BCPPy, BC-ZnO and BC-PPy-ZnO films exhibited a good antioxidant activity in comparison with pure BC film. PPy decreases water total soluble matter (TSM %). Electrical conductivity studies of synthesized BC-PPy-ZnO film showed that the film electrical resistance is changed in the different oxidation-reduction or volatile compounds medium, so the results suggest that BC-PPy-ZnO films may be used as antioxidant food active packaging and smart packaging.
