The field of e-government is characterised by the usage of multiple application and heterogeneous data nvironments. In this paper we claim that semantic ontologies, an increasingly popular and widely accepted knowledge epresentation paradigm, can be applied to solving the problems of discovery, aggregation, and interoperability among e-government services. Individual services are integrated on semantic level, using semantic description of existing services, into a scenario, realisation of which leads to a solution of a problem faced by the end-users (citizens or businesses) in a given life event. We outline the shortcoming of traditional service-oriented technologies, prove the necessity of introducing semantic descriptions, and show how ontologies and semantically enhanced process workflows can be utilised in order to mitigate collaborative ad-hoc computing scenarios, such as high-quality services in the egovernment domain
