Abstract:

Historic buildings as cities’ landmarks play a significant role while reflecting the socio-cultural and physical identity. In recent years, the preservation issue is an international concern in order to keep these evidence of past alive for present and future generations. New additions which define as infill design projects are the common proposal according to the preservation, conservation, and protection of the building’s character. This includes both tangible and intangible attributes of the building which displays a specific reputation. They impact on these attributes through either contextual or non-contextual design approaches. Meanwhile, evaluation of their influences brings up the critical role toward the regeneration of characterization theme. Methodologically a case study approach adopted to investigate the effects through all socio-cultural, economic and physical criteria. Although there are both good and bad projects related to this subject, the cases in this research are the ones that enhance the function and also the character. The results indicate that the most important effect of new addition nature and appearance is the adaptation between the old and new. So, this led historic building to be compatible with developments, changes, society, culture, traditions, and economic of contemporary and future times.
