Abstract:

Landfills are a major source of soil pollution due to leachates of municipal wastes and migration of contaminants through the soil. Clay barriers are a common method for controlling leachates in the landfills. In order to design efficient clay barriers, an understanding is required for the behavior of contaminants during migration through clay barriers. In this study, a column test is modeled with the use of CFD method. The simulation results were in good agreement with experimental data. This model provided data about important parameters which affect the component migration through clay. This model proved that distribution coefficient in the seepage velocities which is less than 0.035 m/a is negligible in comparison with diffusion coefficient. The increase in bed height leads to increase in adsorber saturation point. The results also indicated that, the increase in porosity decreases contaminants concentration in the column output and the increase in the anion concentration in the sours solution increases mass transfer. At the end, it was found that inlet velocity has no effect on concentration distribution through the column.
