Abstract:

Tide gauge measurements of Oman Sea from 1993-2005 are used to analyze the sea level changes along the Iranian coast. Meteorological parameters, monsoon index and North Atlantic Oscillation index (NAO) during the same period are used to study the response of the Oman Sea mean level to local and global forcing . The relation between sea level and forces are examined . The low correlation coefficient (-0.35) between Oman Sea mean level and atmospheric pressure at Chabahar indicates that the respond to atmospheric pressure is not an inverse barometric. A coherence analysis is applied to mean sea level and atmospheric functions to examine the local forcing and validate the inverse barometer effect as well. Coherence analysis between sea level and atmospheric pressure reveals a singnificant coherence. This means that the Oman Sea mean level respond to atmospheric pressure as an inverse barometer . One can notice that the correlation between atmospheric pressure and mean sea level found is because of the combination of other interrelated other physical processes. Known teleconnection such as the NAO and the monsoon index are not significantly correlated to Oman Sea mean level. Linear regression and ARIMA model forecasts were fitted to mean sea level and compared to the actual data. Although the two models gave similar results, but the ARIMA model performed considerably better.
