Abstract:

The increase of pollutants driven by wrong solid waste management in rural areas causes challenges like groundwater contamination which threatens public health. In addition, the poverty of energy in rural regions of developing countries is currently an obstacle to sustainable development. A significant concern in the policies legislated for energy supplying of rural areas is the availability of affordable, clean and reliable energy source. Proposing a set of practical waste management strategies would be beneficial to the rural areas in order to decrease the consequences of traditional waste disposal and supply the energy demand with renewable energy sources resulted in economic savings. In the present study, statistical estimations regarding waste solid wastes generation in the central province of Iran has been provided. Isfahan rural areas with an average waste generation estimated at 0.497 kg/ca/day is capable for biogas energy generation due to the high amount of putrescible material ratio. Conducting a survey among waste management experts showed that waste separation prior to collection is suggested as the most efficient method for the management of waste collection in the area.
