Abstract:

Recently, there is increasing interest in using electronic toll tag readers to provide travel time measurements and in utilizing predictive modeling of travel times. Also, most of traffic management centers use point detector data to estimate off-line travel times. This study aims at examining the differences between travel time estimation based on detector data versus those based on electronic toll tag data at interstate roads in Iran based on different traffic conditions. The results show that there is no significant difference between point detector-based and toll tag travel time estimates and there is about 6% to 21.2% difference between estimates based on detector data versus those based on electronic toll tag reader data depending on the scenarios tested states. The values of the differences between detector data and electronic toll data tag to estimate travel time are expected to be affected by the queue forming and dissipating speeds, route length, and the congestion condition.
