Abstract:

This research examines how notion of space condition the social and private lives of the characters in Thomas Hardy’s Jude the Obscure within Foucauldian framework. Jude the Obscure is a timeless novel that challenges sexual and religious conventions in a way that few other books of the time did. In this novel Hardy shows how restricted societies interferes with the private lives of suppressed and defeated characters, Jude and Sue and causes suffering and pain. The study focuses on showing how foucauldian space functions within the social and private domains in Thomas Hardy’s Jude the Obscure
