Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to explore the use of academic listening self-concept by some male and female Engineering students. The participants of the study were 147 undergraduate students of Engineering at the Iran University of Science and Technology. A revised version of academic self-concept scale developed by Liu and Wang(2005) was used in this study. The results of the study showed that in both male and female learners’ responses ‘working hard to get better grades in academic listening course’, ‘doing the best to pass academic listening course’, ‘paying attention to the lecturers’ strategies received the highest percentages, respectively. With regard to categories of academic self-concept, male and female students were both good at using ‘academic confidence’ strategies. Listening teachers are suggested to provide students with sufficient emotional and academic support to improve students’ selfconcept and achievement
