Abstract:

Stress Corrosion Cracking (SCC) is a normal phenomenon occurring in engineering of solids and should not be looked upon as either magic or a surprise occurrence . It is a natural phenomenon, and the fact that it is so limiting to the performance capability of engineering solids should not be a reason for omitting it from design. SCC is a low probability , high consequence event. This paper reviews the numerical assessment methods for detectiong Stress Corrosion Cracking (SCC). It is indicated that the In-secant formula and the Level 2 Strip Yield Model could be very conservative , with significant variances in the level of conservatism, though, unlike the In-secant formula , the Level 2 Strip Yield Model was not consistently conservative. On the other hand , the predictability for both the PAFFC and CorLAS TM criteria was shown to be much better , with CorLA TM being the more accurate of the two the In-secant criterion is not appropriate for obtaining a very accurate assessment of pipe failure pressures for lines containing SCC.
