Hand contamination of health care worker

Background:The findings of previous studies shown that at least one third of all nosocominal infectionsare preventable.The large number of them associated with cross- contamination , and theimportant route of spread is transmition of pathogens by the hands of health care worker(HCWs).In the non pathologic status ,there are two major groups of microorganisms on theskin: resident flora and transient flora.For prevention of bacterial contamination by transientflora and possible resultant infection requires timely hand cleaning .Our objective is toevaluate the occurrence hand contamination of health care worker in the Kosar Hospital.Patients and Methods:For this cross-sectional study data were evaluated from 585 health care worker at the KosarHospital between March 2009 and December 2012. Hands swab for Gram stain and culturewere obtained from random health stuff. Both descriptive and statistical analysis methodswere applied.Results:Of 585 health care workers, 30 (5%) were male and, 320 (54/7%) swabs cultured, showed nogrowth. The most common organism grown from health care workers was Coagulasenegative Staph 180 (30/8%) followed by, gram positive Bacilli 68( 11/7 %), Klebsiella 11 (1/9%) and Enterococcus 6 ( 1%).Conclusions:The duration of hospitalization and kind of patient care were significantly associated withhealth care worker contamination. Therefore hand cleaning was most important role innosocominal infection control to prevention or reduce cross- contamination in Hospital.
