Abstract:

Objective: Reperfusion after liver ischemia may lead to metabolic and structural damage. Picrocrocin as an antioxidant has numerous pharmacological effects. In thisstudy, the pathological study of the preventive effects of picrocrocin capsule on liver ischemia-reperfusion damage in rabbits was investigated. Materials and Methods: 15 adult and healthy New Zealand male rabbits were randomly divided into three groups of 5 (1- surgical control, 2- ischemia-reperfusion (I/R), and 3- ischemia-reperfusion and treated with picrocrocine (I/R+PIC)). The rabbits in the control group underwent surgery but did not tolerate liver ischemiareperfusion. Rabbits of the I/R group underwent surgery and left for 45 minutes under ischemia and then 45 minutes under reperfusion of liver. The rabbits of the I/R+PIC group were under surgical procedure and underwent ischemia for 45 minutes, then undergone liver reperfusion for 45 minutes. These rabbits received picocrocin at a dose of 200 mg / kg intraperitoneally 15 minutes before induction of ischemia. At the end of the test, rabbit liver was isolated for malondialdehyde (MDA) examination and pathologic evaluation. Results: The concentration of MDA in the I/R group was significantly higher than other groups (P ث‚ 0.05 ). In the I/R+PIC group, MDA concentration was significantly lower than that of I/R group (P ث‚ 0.05 ). In the I/R+PIC group, picocrocin was responsible for controlling ischemic- reperfusion damage in the liver of rabbits. Discussion and Conclusion: Picrocrocin can control the effects of liver ischemiareperfusion damage.
