Abstract:
INTRODUCTION: Lipomas are the most common benign soft tissue tumors. This tumor is not usual in the head and neck (less than 15% of all lipomas) and the intrinsic form of isolated laryngeal lipoma is quite rare.Grossly, lipomas consist of bright yellow fat. They appear smooth or lobulated, often well circumscribed or encapsulated, with yellowish-tan color. Microscopically, lipomas are composed of mature adipocytes which vary slightly in size and shape with a large central vacuole which often displace nucleus peripherally. PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 68-year old male with 8 months history of voice change and a large submucosal mass obliterating the left side of the glottic portion of larynx on examinations. A 2.4x2 cm encapsulated tumor was surgically excised which containing almost entirely uniform appearing mature adipocytes on histopathology examination. The diagnosis was compatible with lipoma. DISCUSSION: . In literature only 17 cases were reported and classified as isolated true intrinsiclaryngeal lipomas to this date and considering that isolated laryngeal lipoma symptoms are uncharacteristic and often has no systemic manifestation, clinical diagnosis is difficult and treatment is based on complete excision of the tumor. CONCLUSION: We describe an extremely rare case of intrinsic laryngeal lipoma ,treated by excisional biopsy with success.
