Abstract:

There are plenty of soft and hard tissue procedures that can be performed with lasers in oral surgery.Lasers are becoming the standard of care for many oral and maxillofacial procedures, and they are being introduced as an efficient instrument for a variety of new applications within the specialty. Lasers are becoming increasingly popular due to the advent of office-based lasers, which are small, portable, and easy to manipulate within the oral cavity. The acceptance of lasers as viable alternatives to traditional methods in surgery.Soft Tissue Clinical Applications:For many intraoral soft tissue surgical procedures, the laser is a viable alternative to the scalpel. The most popular and effective lasers nowadays for soft tissue procedures are CO, Nd:YAG and Diode lasers. There are many categories of soft tissue procedures that can be treated by lasers, such as gingivectomy, frenectomy, depigmentation, second stage exposure of dental implants, sub-gingival debridement curettage, incisional and excisional biopsies of both benign and malignant lesions, removal of granulation tissue, coagulation of free gingival graft donor site, irradiation of apthous ulcers, removal of diseased tissue around the implants etc.
