Abstract:

BackgroundThe use of gold nanoparticles to increase the sensitivity of polymer gels is still controversial. The interaction of photons with gold nanoparticles may lead to an increase in the dose of thepolymer gel. In fact, according to the emitted photon energy and atomic number of goldnanoparticles, photon energy less than 0.5 MV could result in photoelectric interaction which inturn might be raise the energy absorbing material.Materials and methodsWhile spherical gold nanoparticles with dimensions of approximately 15 nm were prepared usingsynthesis method, the MAGIC-f polymer gel was prepared with and without gold nanoparticles inthe range of 0-60Gy with 6Gy-step (13 groups and 3 samples in each group) and Gama-ray ofCo-60 and MRI (1.5Tesla). Using DICOM image in R2-calcuate software was run in MATLABsoftware, signal intensity was determined on R2(I/T2).ResultsChange of R2 parameter of MAGIC-f with nanoparticle showed that the value of sensitivity inlinear range was about 0.15 (1/t) in each Gy. The mean value of standard deviations (in eachgroup) in the linear region was 0.3(1/t) and mean percent of coefficient variation was obtainedabout 0.1. The correlation coefficient of dose-response parameters in linear regression R2 wasestimated around 0.96. The results of R2 parameter sensitivity without gold nanoparticle polymergel MAGIC-f was obtained about 0.12(1/s) in each Gy compared to the value of 0.15(1/s) for357samples with gold nanoparticles. The comparison between these values demonstrated increasingof %25 for with gold nanoparticle group.DiscussionThis study found that MAGIC-f of with gold nanoparticle may cause increasing of absorbeddose, which can be used by clinicians as well.
