Abstract:

Background and Aim: Virtual water and gray water are two categories of water resources that people are less aware and ignore. Therefore, the present study aimed to identify virtual and gray water as a solution to water scarcity in world. Materials and Methods: This research is a review study using the resources of Latin and Persian from print materials to Internet resources and search related articles in the magiran, Google Scholor, Pubmed, Iranmedex, SID citation databases. The keywords used are virtual water, gray water, water footprints and water crisis. A total of 20 articles were found that after reviewing the abstract articles and removing unrelated articles, eight papers were used in this study. Results: The review of the papers showed that virtual water was used as the main part of water consumed during the production process. The virtual water quantity of each product or product varies according to the climatic and cultural conditions, the place of production, management, and planning during its production process, for example, the virtual water of one kilogram of wheat in Iran and a European country are different. Gray water for recycled water or household wastewater is referred to as waste water from daily routine operations, which can be used for irrigation of green spaces and toilet siphons and garden washings. The evaluated articles showed that in Iran, the use of this type of water has not yet been implemented, while in many European and American countries, these resources are used to the maximum. Conclusion: In general, paying attention to virtual water and preventing its exit from the country and exploitation of gray water can help the country in addition to environmental benefits. It is therefore advisable to counteract the depression of the water by informing the various strata of the community and those responsible for virtual water and technologies benefiting from gray water.
