Abstract:

The purpose of this research is to review the present situations and conditions of Islamic cities and to analyze the formation of interactive spaces, influenced by historical background and architecture, in their current architecture and urbanization.Humans are innately social beings, and this characteristic is essential for their survival and sustainability. Due to the fact that people’s culture is directly associated with the formation of urban spaces and their practicability, it can be inferred that social interactions are one of the most salient concepts in cultural-social aspects and physical forms of the cities.According to Islamic ideology, the goal of social interactions is based on ethics and helping one another, which is referred to as ‘Ta’avon’ (cooperation) in Islamic science. Moreover, Islamic teachings point to several aspects of cooperation and social interactions, of which the latter one is mentioned as a positive and crucial element and the society is encouraged to establish them. However, these interactions should be completely responsive to the users’ needs in the terms of confidentiality principles.Considering the historical similarity and the existence of civilization and culture before and after Islam in Iran and Egypt, this study elaborates on urban spaces in these two counties. Urban spaces are small samples of the whole urban life and one of the most important places for social interactions, therefore, two squares in Tajrish (in Tehran City) situated in Iran, and Tahrir Square (in Cairo City) situated in Egypt, as two distinguished landmarks for social interactions, will be investigated in this study to define the reflection of history and culture in formation of the current social interactions in these two countries.
