خلاصه مقاله:
Purpose: To determine the effects of primary pterygium on corneal topographic and endothelial cells. Methods: In this study, 32 patients with unilateral primary pterygium were selected by available sampling method from patients referred to Ophthalmology Clinic of Rassoul Akram Medical Education Center. In an ophthalmologic examination, the pterygium was determined using a biomicroscope machine. To compare ECD, anterior astigmatism, thickness of the thinnest cornea, average keratometry, length of axial, hexagonal, coefficient of variation and depth of the anterior chamber between the eyes, the opposite eye was considered as control. The center-to-center method was used to calculate the density of cells using Specular microscope. Results: In this study 32 patients with primary ptergium with an average age of 44.75±15.88 years were included. In analytical analysis, corneal topographic parameters were not significantly different between the two affected and non-infected eyes (p> 0.05). Also, corneal endothelial parameters between two eyes with and without pterygium in the groups of sex and age groups were not significantly different (p> 0.05). Conclusion: The results of this study indicate that there is no correlation between corneal endothelial cell density (ECD) and pterygium involvement. Also, other parameters of corneal topography including anterior astigmatism, moderate keratometry, length of axial, and depth of the anterior chamber were not associated with the presence of pterygium.
