Abstract:
Purpose: To report a case of methanol-induced optic toxicity, in whom late treatment with steroid pulse resulted in significant improvement. Methods: A 26 year-old man with sudden severe bilateral decreased vision of both eye was consulted from the toxicology department. He was admitted since 1 week ago for hand-made alcohol usage toxicity. Results: At the time of presentation the vision was hand motion bilaterally. Fundus examination showed bilateral optic disc swelling. steroid pulse therapy with intravenous methyl prednisolone acetate was begun for the patient which resulted in significant vision improvements. Six months later the vision was 10/10 bilaterally, although the peripapillary OCT revealed severely reduced peripapillary nerve fiber layer thickness. Conclusion: Hospitalized patients for mathanol toxicity, should be soon consulted with the eye ward, improving the vision prognosis; especialy the patients with decreased consciousness should not be neglected
