Abstract:
Purpose: To determine the effect of cyclopentolate 1% on ocular biometric components in different types of refractive errors in children. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted on 226 eyes of 113 schoolchildren in Shahroud with a mean age of 9.20±1.65 years. All participants had non-cycloplegic and cycloplegic objective refraction using an autorefractometer. Cycloplegia was induced using cyclopentolate 1% eye drops. Biometric measurements were made with Biograph before and after administering cycloplegia Results: After cycloplegia, the vitreous chamber depth (0.05 mm), lens thickness (0.15 mm), axial length (0.01 mm), and lens power (0.34 diopter (D)) significantly decreased while the anterior chamber depth (0.18 mm) and pupil diameter (1.6 mm) increased (p for all tests <0.001). For changes in lens power, a significant interaction wasobserved between different types of refractive errors and cycloplegia, such that under cycloplegia, lens power increased (1.24 D) in myopic children and decreased (0.27 D) in hyperopics. Conclusion: According to the findings of this study, cycloplegia reduces the thickness of the crystalline lens, and subsequently causes an increase in the anterior chamber depth. The largest change occurs in hyperopics. The findings of this study highlight the importance of cycloplegic examinations for the precise determination ofrefractive errors, especially before refractive surgery.
