Abstract:

Background: Acinetobacter baumannii are accountable for hospital-acquired infections which are associated to the biofilms forming ability of this pathogen. Biofilms participate an important function in their continuity and antibiotic resistance. The objective was to Identification biofilms formation among Acinetobacter baumannii isolates from Kashan. Methods: A total of 47 clinical isolates of Acinetobacter baumannii were processed by inoculation on Blood agar, MacConkey agar, Gram staining and various biochemical tests for identification. Biofilms forming ability of bacteria were analyzed by usually used microtiter plate method. Results: Isolates from different departments Shahid Beheshti Hospital were included: 24 (51.1%) intensive care units, 10 (21.3%) general surgery, 10 (21.3%) emergency, and 3 (6.3%) pediatric. All isolates were found to produce biofilms which included: 33 (70.2%) of isolates belonged to the category of strong biofilms producers and 13 (27.7%) to moderate biofilms producers, and 1 (2.1%) to weak biofilms producers. Conclusion: Our results showed biofilms forming strains are more frequently isolated from cross infections samples; it is very important that bacteria producing biofilms can have the potential to be more pathogenic and treatment with antibiotics is more difficult.
