Abstract:

This paper presents an accurate model of machine tool structure to predict the machining dynamics and estimate the stability margins of various tool configurations without the need for repeated experimental measurements. To achieve this, effect of the tool-holder joint interface and also holder flexibility effect on the machining dynamics is considered intensively in straight turning process. Since the tool used in the process has a short length, it is modeled as a continuous Timoshenko beam. The joint interface between the tool and holder are modeled as an elastic support and is represented by translational and rotational springs with structural damping. The elastic support parameters are identified by means of experimental modal test on holder and tool-holder assembly. It is shown the model is capable of accurately generating frequency response function (FRF) of the assembly at the tool tip and therefore can be used to study the stability of machining conditions in various tool configurations.
