Evaluation of the Intervention Priorities Intended to Improve the Dilapidated Urban Areas (Case study of Kerman, Iran)

The objective of this study was to explore and prioritize physical, social and aesthetic criteria that are affected by the current deterioration trend in the city’s old quarter. This, in order to arrive at a suitable and effective intervention method intended to improve the dilapidated urban fabric of the Kargar street neighborhood of the city of Kerman, Iran.Data collection methods included the surveying of neighborhood residents with questionnaires, in-person observations and with reference to written records. Data analysis was conducted using the Delphi assessment model. The multi-criteria evaluation model was used for the assignment of weight to the various study indicators in hierarchical analysis, while employing the Expert Choice software for raw data analysis.Study results indicated that, the physical criterion had the greatest weight among the 3 aforementioned criteria, with social and aesthetic criteria following respectively. The study also showed that the physical criterion had a greater weight in the southern half of the study area than in its northern half. Finally, in accordance to the analytical hierarchy process used in this study, it was concluded that the southern section of the study area should be given priority for possible intervention efforts.
