Abstract:

Despite all the innovations and technological/scientific advances that the world has seen so far, malnutrition remains a widespread issue across the globe. Low-income communities at the Base of the economic Pyramid (BoP) spend more than half of their income on food. Nevertheless, each year 3 millions infant and young children lose their life because of under-nutrition. Globally, more than a quarter of the chikdren under five are stunted, irremediably reducing their chances of growing into successful adults. The problem is not necessarily about the lack of solutions. A range of solutions have already been developed to improve the quality of nutrition during the critical first 3 years of life. However, not much is known about the market-based approaches to facilitate adoption and diffusion of nutritional solutions among the undeserved communities. This study reflects on stories of success and failure in introducing nutritious complementary foods and supplements for low-income families in developing countries. It showcases the findings from several case studies, with regards to best practices in pro-poor innovations in nutrition.
