Abstract:
Background and Aim: Chronic kidney disease is one of the most prevalent diseases. The current study aimed at investigating the relationship between protein intake, fiber intake and the ratio of protein to fiber and chronic kidney disease. Methods: This study was performed on data collected from 1113 adults aged ≥ 30 years who participated in the Tehran Lipid and Glucose Study. Dietary data were evaluated using a valid and reliable semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire. Anthropometric and biochemical indices were also measured. Chronic kidney disease was defined as glomerular filtration rate (GFR) less than 60 mL / min / 1.73 m². Odds Ratio was calculated using logistic regression. P-values less than 0.05 were considered significant. Results: Participants included 546 men (49.1%). The mean BMI of participants was 27.64 ± 4.54 kg/m². The mean age of participants was 43.78 ± 9.97 years. After adjusting for the effect of confounding variables, there was no significant relationship between dietary variables and the incidence of chronic kidney disease. However, there was a significant correlation between protein to fiber ratio and the incidence of chronic kidney disease without adjusting the effect of confounding variables. The odds ratio (95% confidence interval) for the second tertile was 0.67 (0.48-0.99) and for the third tertile was 0.60 (0.40-0.89). The P-value was 0.04 and 0.03 respectively. Conclusion: The results did not confirm the significant relationship between the mentioned variables. This, may be due to dietary assessment only at the beginning of the study and the effect of other factors affecting the incidence of chronic kidney disease.
