Abstract:

Background and Aim: Nutrition influences socioeconomic status directly. The purpose of this study is to determine the impact of socio-economic inequality on the consumption of fruits and vegetables.Methods: Data was obtained from the Ravensor cohort study in the recruitment phase of the participants .Information of 10036 males and women of the age group 35-65 years old were analyzed. Fruit and vegetable consumption data were obtained using Iranian Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ).To obtain the wealth index, we used the principle component analysis and the concentration index to express inequality. We used decomposition analysis to show the contribution of each of the independent variables. For calculations, the software used was STATA version 14. Results: The average consumption of fruits and vegetables was 504 grams. 44% of people daily eat less than 400 grams of fruits and vegetables. The concentration index in the total population was 0.19, which indicates more fruit and vegetable consumption in the higher SES of the society. With a positive correlation with the increase in BMI (r=0.63), SES (r = 0.5), and the level of education (r=0/4) had the most effects on fruit and vegetable consumption, respectively. The increase in household size (r = -0.22), the increase in age (-0.3) and the gender of the woman (-0.0 3) They are inversely related. The contribution of the age group was 65-65% (23%) and the rural population (32%).Conclusion: The socioeconomic status plays an important role in the consumption of fruits and vegetables. Improving SES results in more fruit and vegetable consumption.
