Abstract:

Background and Aim: This study was conducted on the impact of gastric bypass surgery on improvement of obesity related complaints and comorbidities in a small group of Iranian population. Methods: Thirty five morbidly obese patients, who volunteered to undergo gastric bypass surgery, were recruited. Anthropometric measurements, comorbidities status and nutritional habits data were gathered at the baseline and six months after the surgery. Data were analyzed using SPSS 16 software. P < 0.05 was considered as statistically significant. Results: The majority of patients were women (80%). Frequency distribution of normal eating habit (five regular meals per day) before and after surgery was statistically significant (p=0.01), while for snacking and three large meals per day habits, this distribution was not statistically significant (p> 0.05). All complaints of eating disorders (objective bulimia nervosa and night eating syndrome) were significantly improved (p<0. 05). A significant reduction was observed in the dose of medications prescribed for comorbidities associated with obesity (p=0. 001). Moreover, six months after the surgery, frequency distribution of several obesity related complaints such as knee pain, hirsutism, acanthosis nigricans and sleep apnea were reduced significantly (p<0.05). Whereas, no significant improvement occurred in hair loss, brittle nails, and menstrual dysfunction (p> 0.05). Conclusion: In this study gastric bypass surgery improved the normal eating habits, eating disorders, and obesity related complaints in the six months of post-surgery period.
