Abstract:

Background and Aim: To assess the effectiveness of vitamin D3 treatment in ulcerative colitis’s disease and serum visfatin and vascular endothelial growth factor level’s with regard to improved disease course and lengthen remission duration in patientsMethods: We performed a randomized double-blind placebo-controlled trial to assess the benefits of one muscular injection of Vitamin D3 in ulcerative colitis’s disease. We included 90 patients with ulcerative colitis in remission. Patients were randomized to receive either one muscular injection of 1 mL 300,000 IU Vitamin D3 (n = 46) or placebo 1ml normal saline (n = 40)Results: Serum levels of 25(OH)D increased in vitamin D group from mean 33.3 [standard deviation (s.d.) 7.0 ng/mL] to mean 40.8 ng/mL (s.d. 5.2 ng/mL) (P < 0.001).Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) from mean 368.17 ng/L (s.d. 151.01 ng/L) to mean 261.77 ng/L (s.d. 112.1 ng/L) (P < 0.001) and from mean 357.33 ng/L (s.d. 152.33 ng/L) to mean 255.48 ng/L (s.d. 118.37) in intervention and placebo group respectively, after 3 months. However, Serum level visfatin from mean 6/10 ng/mL (s.d. 1/71 ng/mL) to meam8/21 ng/mL (s.d. 2/47 ng/mL) in intervention group and from mean 5.93ng/ml (s.d. 2.1 ng/ml) to 7.44ng/ml (s.d. 2.61ng/ml)in placebo group (p= <0/001)Conclusion: One muscular injection of Vitamin D3 in ulcerative colitis’s patient, did not cause any significant changes in serum visfatin and vascular endothelial growth factor levels, Well-designed RCTs and longitudinal studies are needed to further clarify the role of vitamin D in IBD pathogenesis and its therapy
