Abstract:

Background and Aim: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of 50 and 100 mg doses of Cuminum Cyminum L on insulin resistance, lipid profile and anthropometric indices in patients with diabetes type II.Methods: The subjects were divided into three groups after selecting them randomly according to the inclusion criteria. These three groups included: 1- the group who consumed the extract of essential oil of Cuminum Cyminum L. capsule (100 mg/day), 2- Cuminum Cyminum L. capsule (50mg/day), and 3- placebo. Anthropometric measurements and blood samples were taken at baseline and after 8 weeks of intervention. Then supplementary treatment was continued for 8 weeks and a blood sample was taken again after the end of this period. Results: Consumption of the Cuminum cyminum L. resulted in a significant decrease in FBS, serum level of insulin, HOMA-IR , total cholesterol and LDL and significant increase in HDL. Administration of the Cuminum cyminum L. had no significant effect on VLDL, TG, HOMA-B, QUICKI and anthropometric measurements compared to placebo. Conclusion: Administering the 50 mg and 100 mg Cuminum Cyminum L. supplement in patients with diabetes type II for eight weeks may decrease the serum levels of insulin, FBS, total cholesterol, LDL and HOMA-IR and also it may increase the serum levels of HDL. In addition it may control the disease of diabetes in these patients.
