Abstract:

Background and Aim: Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is one of the most common metabolic diseases. Studies have found a better glycemic status following dietary management and physical activity including aqua aerobics. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of Mediterranean diet and aqua aerobic exercise on the serum levels of apoproteins, glycemic and inflammatory indices in patients with T2D.Methods: This randomized controlled trial was performed on 64 subjects with T2D. Patients were randomly assigned in 4 groups: Mediterranean diet group (MG), aqua aerobic group (AG), combination of Mediterranean diet and aqua aerobic (MAG) and control group (CG). Before and after 8 weeks of intervention, a blood sample was collected from individuals and variables were measured. Results: The use of the Mediterranean diet alone and also in combination with aqua aerobics and aqua aerobics alone in comparison to control group led to a decrease in apoprotein B levels of -6.51, -10.79, -5.18 and -0.22, increase in apoprotein A1 were 1.65, 4.47, 2.32 and 0.19, respectively, FBS decreased by -5.91, -9.79, -4.63, and 2.21 mg / dL, serum insulin was -2.36, -3.49, -2.98 and 1.6 μIU/ml respectively, HOMA-IR index was -0.56, -0.82, -0.69 and 0.5 and the hs-CRP level was -12.31, -27.18, -9.83, and -6.55, respectively. These changes were significant in MAG, and in terms of inter-group differences, there were significant differences between MAG with others. Conclusion: : Mediterranean diet and its combination with aqua aerobics have beneficial effects on glycemic indices and serum apoproteins in patients with T2D.
