Abstract:

Background and Aim: General and abdominal obesity are related to the risk of non-communicable. This study was aimed to test the association between socio-demographic, Information- Motivation-Behavioral Skills (IMB) and overweight and central obesity among women. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 260 women aged between 20 and 49 years were selected through systematic cluster sampling from 5 areas of Tehran, Iran. Women completed a questionnaire containing socio-economic information, Household Food Insecurity Access Scale (HFIAS) and the IMB model constructs by face-to-face interviews. Height, weight, and waist circumference were measured and body mass index was calculated. Analysis of variance (ANOVA), chi-square tests, and multiple logistic regression analysis were used for statistical analysis. Results: The mean age of participants was 34.7 (SD = 7.59) years. Overweight, obesity and abdominal obesity was found in 35%, 21.2%, and 34.6%respectively. Frequency of mild, moderate, and severe household food insecurity was 46%, 15% and 6%, respectively. The most important determinants of overweight/obesity in women were age (OR=1.09, 95% CI 1.03-1.14), educational level (OR for illiterate/primary=2.35, 95% CI 1.05-5.27), and total expenditure (OR for high expenditure =3.14, 95% CI 1.06-9.37). Moreover, age (OR=1.12, 95% CI 1.06-1.18), marital status (OR for married= 6.44, 95% CI 1.94- 21.40), low education, unemployment (OR=0.38, 95% CI 0.16-0.91), number of rooms (OR=1.19, 95% CI 1.03-3.45), and self-regulation score (OR=0.94, 95% CI 0.88-1.00) significantly increased the likelihood of central obesity. Conclusion: Recognizing the most influencing socio-economic factors might help to plan better educational interventions for decreasing obesity and promote healthy nutritional behavior in women.
