THE EFFECTS OF TRIPTERYGIUM WILFORDII ROOT ON ANTHROPOMETRIC INDICATORS AND SERUM LIPID LEVELS IN OBESE WOMEN: A RANDOMIZED DOUBLE BLINDED PLACEBO CONTROLLED TRIAL

Abstract:

Background and Aim: Obesity has more than doubled worldwide since 1980. According to the World Health Organization, in 2015, over 2.3 billion people are overweight and over 700 million are obese. Tripterygium wilfordii is an herbaceous plant of the celastraceae family which is commonly used in China. The roots of this plant have therapeutic effect. This study was conducted to survey about the effect of this plant’ root on the anthropometric indicators and serum lipid levels in obese women.Methods: The people who entered the criteria were registered and their names were recorded in a list by number and then, by obtaining informed consent from patients, using random allocation of patients to two groups (Intervention and placebo). Individuals consumed one 200 mg tablet daily with lunch. At the end of the 12 weeks, 5 cc blood was taken (after 8-12 hours of fasting). Results: In the supplementation of Tripterygium wilfordii root after 12 weeks, the Weight loss group showed significant weight loss from 83.4 kg to 82.10 (P-value = 0.001) and a significant decrease in body mass index from 35.55 07/35 (P-value = 0.001). Also, there was a significant decrease in total cholesterol from 179.45 to 166.160 (p-value = 0.004). However, significant changes in serum triglyceride, LDL and HDL levels were found between the two groups after 12 weeks Failed.Conclusion: : After twelve weeks of intervention with the root of Tripterygium wilfordii, there were significant changes in weight, BMI and total cholesterol.
