Abstract:

Background and Aim: Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease is considered the hepatic manifestation of metabolic syndrome which is associated with increased blood pressure. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of turmeric supplementation on blood pressure and anthropometric indexes in patients with NAFLD.Methods: In this double-blind randomized controlled clinical trial 46 patients with NAFLD (males & females) aged 20–60 years old were randomly allocated in two groups, turmeric group (n = 23) and placebo group (n = 23). Turmeric group was given six turmeric capsules contained 500 mg turmeric powder (6×500 mg) daily and control group received six placebo capsules daily for 12 weeks. Dietary data, blood pressure and anthropometric measurements of subjects were collected at the baseline and at the end of the study. Data were analyzed by independent t test, paired t test and analysis of covariance. Results: No significant differences were seen in daily dietary intakes, blood pressure and anthropometric indexes of subjects between two groups at baseline. Systolic blood pressure, body mass index, waist circumference and fat mass of subjects significantly decreased in turmeric group in comparison to baseline values at the end of study (all, p> 0.05). Changes of variables were not significant in control group (p< 0.05)Conclusion: Turmeric supplementation reduced systolic blood pressure and improved adiposity in studied subjects and may be helpful in the control of NAFLD risk factors.
