Abstract:

Background and Aim: The association between dietary patterns and food security with coronary artery disease Methods: The current study was a case-control study conducted on 540 adults aged 18-65 years old referred to the Imam Reza hospital. Food consumption information in participants was collected by Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ). Also, the demographic and household food insecurity collected by validated questionnaire. Major dietary patterns identified using principal component factor analysis. The odds ratios (ORs) for quartiles of patterns scores were calculated using multinomial logistic regression. Statistical analysis was performed by SPSS20 software. Results: Three major dietary patterns were identified: Western-like, Sugar and fast foods and Mediterranean-like. The Western-like and Sugar and fast foods dietary patterns were positively related with CAD, so that in the multivariate analysis the OR for 4thquartile compared to the 1thquartile was (2.16, 95% CI: 1.12-4.1, P=0.02) and (13.5, 95% CI: 6.22-29.5, P<0.001), respectively. The Mediterranean-like dietary pattern was inversely associated with (0.74, 95% CI: 0.39-1.42, P=0.36). Food insecurity increased the risk of CAD although this difference was not significant (OR = 1/2, P = 0.5).Conclusion: The Mediterranean-like dietary pattern was inverse while the Western-like and Sugar and fast foods dietary patterns were positively related with CAD.T he relationship between food security with CAD should be investigated in further studies
