Abstract:

Background and Aim: Elderly people are at higher risk of food insecurity because of limitation in accessibility or uncertain access to adequate food supply not only as a result of economic limitation but also as the outcome of inability to intake food due to cognitive or functional impairment and health problems. This study was conducted to examine the relationship between socio-economic factors and food insecurity among elderly population. Methods: This cross-sectional study was performed in 2016 on 720 elderly people of Qarchak city that were selected by proportional stratified sampling method. Food insecurity was evaluated using FaCPS-FSSM food security questionnaire validated for the elderly via interview. Moreover, socioeconomic questionnaire filled out during face to face interviews. All statistical analysis was performed using the SPSS version 21 software. Multinomial and binary logistic regression were used to examine sociodemographic and economic factors association with food insecurity in participants. Results: Food insecurity was found in 36.5% of the elderly population (43% rural area and 30% urban area). Food-insecure elderly had lower education (P<0.001) and household income (P<0.001). Additionally. Charities’ food assistance were negatively associated with food insecurity (P<0.01), social protection (P=0.013), and having health insurance (P= 0.02).Conclusion: Food insecurity is related to low income and education, particularly in rural areas. The results of our study indicated that food assistance from governmental organizations, charities and having health insurance may be associated to reduced risk of food insecurity in elderly population.
