Abstract:

Background and Aim: One of the most common problem in persons who undergo weight reduction diet is the combined loss of Fat free mass (FFM) and resting metabolism rate (RMR), resulting in a slowing of weight loss is weight loss procedure. On the other hand, reducing the intake of nutrients can reduce the precursor of L-Carnitine (Fat transfer vector into the mitochondria) and consequently decrease the plasmata level. In this study, changes in body composition and resting metabolic rate during the 4 weeks of supplementation with L-carnitine weight loss diets were studiedMethods: Healthy Overweight or obese Women (grades 1 and 2) in over 25 BMI range who have a history of significant weight loss of 10 to 20% during the last 3 to 6 months were randomly divided into two groups and supplementated for 4 weeks with L-carnitine or placebo along with weight loss diet. Body composition, resting metabolic rate, thyroid hormone levels and blood triglycerides were measured in these patients. Results: At the end of the study after 4 weeks of supplementation at a dose of 2gr/d of L- carnitine no significant difference between resting metabolic rate, body weight, body fat content, body fat, Fat free mass, Triglyceride and thyroid hormones in the blood supplementation compared to placebo was observed. Conclusion: Supplementation with L-carnitine in patients with a history of weight loss does not have a significant effect on resting metabolic rate and body composition.
