Abstract:

Background and Aim: The aim of the study was to determine the effect of vitamin D3 supplementation on some hematopoietic indices in vitamin D deficient pregnant women. Methods: This study is a single arm trail (because of ethical limitation there was no placebo group) which was carried out on 41 pregnant women with vitamin D deficiency (VDD) in the first trimester of pregnancy. Each participant received 24 weeks vitamin D3 supplementation: 50 000 IU vitamin D3 / week for 12 weeks (phase I) and then 50 000 IU vitamin D3 / month for 3 months (phase II). In three steps, before and after the first and second stage of intervention, serum 25OHD, and hematopoietic indices (RBC, MCH, MCHC, HCT, Hb & MCV) were measured. Results: 25OHD and MCV increased significantly (p = 0.0001 & p = 0.008,) after the first stage of intervention and there were no significant changes in, MCH and MCHC. After the second stage of intervention, RBC, Hb and HCT increased significantly (p = 0.004, p = 0.001 & p = 0.001) and 25OHD decreased significantly (p = 0.0001). Conclusion: Vitamin D supplementation may positively effects on hematopoietic indices. Appropriate dose of vitamin D is important to treat pregnant women with VDD.
