ASSESSMENT OF MACRONUTRIENT INTAKE AND PHYSICAL ACTIVITY SCORES IN ADOLESCENTS WITH METABOLIC SYNDROME

Abstract:
Background and Aim: Metabolic syndrome and its dependency with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes is a significant public health concern. We hypothesized that the intake of macronutrients and physical activity in these adolescents is not within the recommended range. Methods: In this study, 21 adolescents (13-19 y) with metabolic syndrome were selected based on IDF criteria. 24-h dietary record questionnaires were filled out from patients for dietary assessment for three days. Physical activity scores were determined by International Physical Activity Questionnaire.Results: The results indicate that energy intake in this adolescents were 2557.55±720.27 kcal/day. Carbohydrate and protein intake were within the recommended range: carbohydrate(g/day) (% of Energy); 328.33±111(51.11) and Protein (g/day) (% of Energy) 71.20±27.93 (11.27). The intake of fats was higher than the recommended values for this age group 112.22±52.24 (37.61) (g/day) (% of Energy). The physical activity scores in this adolescents was 65.90±7.36 hour per week. Conclusion: The intake of fats was higher than the recommended values and physical activity was low. reduction of dietary fat intake and increase the physical activity, which helps prevent of obesity, are recommended.
