Abstract:

Background and Aim: The increasing worldwide trend in pediatric metabolic syndrome is one of the most epidemic warnings in recent decades. We hypothesized that life style change including low calorie diet and physical activity improves some of risk factors associated with metabolic syndrome. Methods: In this study, 21 adolescents (13-19 y) with metabolic syndrome, were selected based on IDF criteria. All the participants received a low calorie diet (300 kcal less than the daily energy requirement) and physical activity (60 minutes per day) for 8 weeks. Anthropometric indices, metabolic syndrome components and lipid profile were assessed before and after the intervention. Results: At the end of study, after adjusting for baseline value, age and sex, changes were characterized by significant reduction in WC (p <0.001), BMI (p <0.001), body weight (P=0.002) and LDL-C (P= 0.04). The differences of other metabolic syndrome components (fasting blood sugar, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, triglyceride and high density lipoprotein) were not significant between baseline and the end of study. Conclusion: It is concluded that low calorie diet and physical activity could improve anthropometric indices and serum levels of LDL-c in adolescents with MetS and provides a basis in clinical management of metabolic syndrome risk factors.
