Abstract:

Background and Aim: Previous studies have shown controversial results about the effect of herbal products intake, such as cinnamon on diabetes mellitus. The aim of current study was to determine the effect of the daily intake of three grams cinnamon in eight weeks on glycemic indicators in patients with type 2 diabetic. Methods: In a double blind, randomized, placebo controlled clinical trial study, 44 patients with type 2 diabetes, aged 57 ± 8 years, were randomly assigned to take either a three g/day cinnamon supplement (n=22) or a placebo (n=22) for eight weeks. We measured the fasting blood glucose, insulin, hemoglobinbA1c, HOMA-IR levels at the beginning and the end of the study. Results: Thirty-nine patients (20 in the intervention group and 19 in the control group) completed the study. After eight week intervention, change in level of fasting blood glucose, insulin, hemoglobinbA1c, HOMA-IR, were not significant in both groups. Also, no significant intergroup differences were observed in these glycemic indicators at the end of intervention. Conclusion: Our study revealed that cinnamon supplementation is not able to significantly affect on glycemic indicators in patients with type 2 diabetes.
