Abstract:

Carbohydrates are the most abundant class of organic compounds found in living organismswhich have received a huge interest for delivery of macromolecular drugs, vaccine developmentand cosmetic industry [1]. the addition of sufficient amounts of carbohydrates to aqueoussolutions of polypropylene glycols (PPGs) leads to the formation of aqueous biphasic systems(ABS) [2]. ABS have been utilized in the extraction and purification of diverse biomolecules suchas proteins, enzymes, nucleic acids, flavor compounds, antioxidants and antibiotics [3].This work addresses the liquid-liquid equilibrium behavior of several ternary PPG +carbohydrate + water systems, at different temperatures. The total number of hydroxyl groupsubstituents and also their relative positions on the pyranose ring play a decisive role in thehydration extent of carbohydrates and subsequently their soluting-out strength. The immiscibilityregion of PPG + carbohydrate + water systems increases by increasing temperature, carbohydratehydrophilicity and polymer molar mass.
