Abstract:

Introduction: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is an important female endocrine and reproductive disorder. The prevalence of PCOS is about 18 % according to Rotterdam criteria. Women with PCOS have increased rates of insulin resistance.Hyperinsulinemia may contribute to the pathogenesis of PCOS by promoting abnormal androgen secretion and disrupting folliculogenesis and menstrual cyclicity.the most widely used drug such as metformin and thiazolidinediones, in PCOS, is often poorly tolerated because of gastrointestinal side effects. Cinnamon, a commonly used spice used since biblical times, has been found to have insulin sensitizing effects in both animal and human studies.Method: All papers on the effect of Cinnamon on Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome indexed in databases pubMed, and Wiley Library and such journals as Science Direct and Springer without any time limit were explored. At first 1196, relevant papers were found and finally 9 ones were chosen based on inclusion criteria of present study.Finding:In the human, oral cinnamon extract reduced fasting glucose, triglycerides, low-density lipoprotein (LDL), and total cholesterol in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus, increased serum total antioxidant capacity. And oral cinnamon extract would improve insulin sensitivity in women with PCOS.Conclusion:supplementation of cinnamon significantly reduced fasting glucose and insulin resistance in women with PCOS and also improved antioxidant status and serum lipid profile in women with PCOS and may be applicable for reducing PCOS risk factors.
