Professional Identity and Social role of Pregnant Women: An Ethno Phenomenological Study

Abstract:

Introduction: pregnancy is considered as a new transition phase for expectant mothers. In our society the role of men and women is going to be changed and women get more new role. Pregnant women can t be excluded from this rule. This matter should be considered as the new subjects in the assessment of them during prenatal cares. Considering this importance, this study aimed to discover the meaning of the Pregnant Women’s Experiences regarding social role.Method: This study was conducted using an ethno-phenomenological approach. 25 Pregnant women with Maximum variation recruited via the purposed sampling during 2016-2017. The study setting was health centers, hospitals, and private clinics of obstetrics of Mashhad. In-depth semi-structured interviews(n=25), Vignette(n=13), observation have been used for data collection. The data was analyzed with MAXQDA software 10 through van Meenen interpretive phenomenological approach.Results: Data analysis led to the emergence the main theme: Confronting couples with social role . This was derived from four theme Mother s decision to work outdoors , Conflict between job and maternal role , Maternal coping strategies at work and Spouse s authority regarding mother s employment .The sub themes of the first theme are:Mother s perspective on employment, Mother s choice of employment, Mother s confrontation with economic independence . Second them consisted of Mother s expectations of the work environment to work out, Conflict of the organization with the continued employment of pregnant mother . The third and the last themes derived from Occupation of the pregnant mother at work , confronting colleagues at work, spouse s preferences regarding mother s employment, spouse s performance in dealing with mother s employment, confrontation of the spouse to mother s earnings respectively.Discussion: The consequence of all endeavors of pregnant women along with their husbands and work environment expectance creates the experience of pregnant women regarding their Professional identity. In providing prenatal care not only the problems of working mothers but the expectations and rules of the work environment as well as the wishes and orders of the spouses should be considered.
