Abstract:

Occidentalism is one of the important research areas in the contemporary era in which great deal of attention is focused on history, the nature and destiny of the western civilization. Numerous goals have been set for it the most important of which is exodus from west orientation and alienation. A great many of the scientists, scholars and graduates from eastern countries had studied in western countries thus being familiar with their culture. I our school courses, we study European and American history and geography besides during university courses we get familiar with western scientists’ views on philosophy and social science along with doing some research on those areas. In spite of the studies that have been done so far, the depth of these studies are not satisfactory and what left is a not-so-complete recognition of western culture leading to alienation and disorganization among societies. Occidentalism other than introducing western science and traditions attempts to make it study case so the eastern societies will be able to revive their long gone identity. In other words, by studying and getting the insight of the other nation (here western ones) they can get to know that of their own. It is worthy to note that sometimes studying about west can result in westernization and sometimes modernism, both of them cause the nonwestern to distance from his nature. In Iran figures like Ahmad Fardid, Ehsan Naraghi and Jalal ale Ahmad had some speeches regarding westernization and Occidentalism, however Hasan Hanafi, an Egyptian contemporary scientist and scholar, in his book ‘Onvan al moghadameh fi Elm Al-Esteghrab’ (introduction to Occidentalism) studied and considered concepts such as Occidentalism, reasons for its emergence, duties, aims and results. This article attempted to reflect on those concepts introduced by Hasan Hanafi. The research methods being implemented in this article are descriptive-analytic and information compilation from library
