Abstract:

The present work examines the microstructure of newly developed multi-principal-element alloy (MPEA) containing Sn, Zn, Cu, Al, and Mg. The chemical composition of 25.5Al-19.8Sn-18.2Zn-18.2Cu-18.2Mg (at%) or 40.29Sn-20.44Zn-19.86Cu-11.79Al-7.59Mg (wt%) was considered for the as-cast alloy to conform to the requirements of high-entropy alloys (HEA). The scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), and x-ray diffraction (XRD) were used for microstructural, elemental, and phase characterization, respectively. It was revealed that the as-cast alloy contains Sn and Zn phases along with the Mg2Sn and AlCuMg intermetallics. This preliminary report demonstrates the possibility to develop multi-principal-element alloys in this simple system.
