Abstract:
Cement used in concrete is one of those materials which their production process releases considerable amount of CO2. Many researches are focusing on replacing cement with any natural and/or recyclable components. However, durability should be taken into account in case of any changes in concrete components especially in reinforced concrete infrastructures in aggressive environments since chloride induced corrosion is currently one of the main issues in marine reinforced concrete structures. Porous solids are of scientific and technological interest because of their ability to interact with atoms, ions and molecules not only at their surfaces, but throughout the bulk of the material. Not surprisingly, traditional applications of porous materials thus involve ion exchange, adsorption (for separation) and catalysis, and many of these benefit from the high order that can be achieved in solids such as zeolites. Zeolite, type of natural supplementary cementitious material, can be used as replacement of cement in order to make sustainable eco-friendly concrete. Moreover, Zeolites are non-toxic aluminosilicates, effective in corrosion inhibition in both acidic and alkaline media. This paper will review the state-of-the art application of zeolite in concrete.
