Abstract:

Rosa canina L. widely used in Iranian traditional medicine. This study was designed to assess the protective activity of ethanol extract of RC in ethanol-induced hepatotoxicity in rats.In our study, 30 male Wistar rats were divided into 5 groups: control, ethanol (5 g. kg−1), ethanol (5 g. kg−1) + RC1 (200 mg. kg−1), ethanol (5 g. kg−1) + RC2 (400 mg. kg−1) group and RC (400 mg. kg−1). Histopathological evaluation, measurement of serum aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), blood urea nitrogen (BUN) and creatinine levels were performed.Ethanol consumption caused a significant increase in the serum levels of AST, ALT, ALP, BUN and creatinine. Co-administration of RC (200 and 400 mg/kg/d) with ethanol, significantly decreased levels of ALT, AST, ALP, BUN and creatinine. The extract (200 and 400 mg/kg/d) ameliorate the histological injuries compare to ethanol group. Our findings suggest a hepatoprotective capability of RC extract against ethanol induced alteration in biochemical and histopathological properties of hepatic tissue
