Abstract:

Fluoxetine or Prozac is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) antidepressant. . Results of different studies show that antidepression drugs interference with sexual hormones in two sex but there is no study on effect of citalopram on spermatogenesis. In this study effects of Fluoxetine in 20 mg/kg/day doses on spermatogenesis of NMRI mice was investigated. In our experiments, Fluoxetine was injected interaperitoneally to 40 mice in 6 weeks age in one periods of 4 week to experimental group. The results demonstrated that significant difference between experimental and control groups was observed (P<0.05). This teratogenic effects involved: decrease in body weight, decrease in testis weight, decrease in seminiferous tubules, decrease in number of spermatogony cells, decrease in number of primary spermatocyte, decrease of spermatid, decrease of number of sperm, decrease of number of sertoli and leydig cells. Testosterone also was evaluated. The obtained results show that the amount of testosterone in experimental groups were increase. Amount of LH were decrease but amount of FSH hormone were not different with control group.
