Abstract:

Curcumin, a hydrophobic polyphenol, is the main material extracted from turmeric dried rhizomes. Curcumin is a potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agent that has been known to have different drug effects. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of antidepressant and anti-oxidant curcumin nano phytosome on depressive disorder in the animal model of schizophrenia. The rats were randomly assigned to six groups of control, positive control, sham, patient, and two groups of patients receiving curcumin and curcumin nano phytosome at a concentration of 15 mg / kg body weight orally for 30 days. All groups received ketamine (02 mg / kg body weight) for intraperitoneal injection for 14 days except control, control and positive control. Depression parameters were assessed by forced swimming test on the 15th and 30th days of treatment. Quantitative data were analyzed by ANOVA, Tukey test at the level of p <0.05. The results of this study showed that injection of ketamine increased the duration of immobilization in comparison with the control group (P≤0.001), and treatment with curcumin and nano phytosome caused The decrease in immobilization time in the swim test (p <0.05). The findings of this study indicate that curcumin and especially its nano phytosome, possibly because of their antioxidant and anti-depressant properties, can reduce depression disorders caused by ketamine induced schizophrenia.
