Abstract:

The shark species Rhizoprionodon acutus is a species complex with several cryptic species, one of which is distributed in the northwestern Indian Ocean such as the Gulf of Oman and the Persian Gulf. In the present study, with examining the intestines of the specimens of this species complex collected from the Persian Gulf, a newcestode species belonging to the genus Phoreiobothrium of the order Onchoproteocephalidea was discovered. In the description of new cestode species, the surface microtriches, which are taxonomically important, must be explained. Hence, in the present study, these structures were studied using the scanning electron microscopy that is described as follows. The papilliform filitriches cover the entire surface of the worm body. Nonetheless, the cephalic peduncle and the entire strobila, in addition to the papilliform filitriches, possess the gladiate spinitriches.Due to the high host specificity of the members of the genus Phoreiobothrium, Rhizoprionodon acutus of the Persian Gulf having this new cestode species can be easily identified from the other members of this milk shark species complex.
